From March 20st to 24th, 2024, the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Velodrome will be the stage for the most important event of the international Para-cycling Track season. With the expectation of receiving 260 athletes from 40 countries, totaling 500 participants including athletes, officials, and technical staff, as well as an estimated audience of over 2500 people, the event promises to boost the local economy and promote social inclusion on and off the track.

This will be the second time that the Para-cycling Track World Championship is held in Brazil. The first edition took place in 2018 and was a great success, praised by almost all participants and used as a reference by the International Cycling Union (UCI). Now, in 2024, the competition returns to write another page in the history of Brazilian para-cycling on the international scene.

In the 2018 edition, records were broken and 192 athletes from 28 countries were present in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian para-cycling was also marked as the first sport to host a world championship in the Olympic legacy of the Rio 2016 Games. Now, aiming to surpass the success achieved in 2018, the World Championship returns with even higher expectations.

“It is a great responsibility to hold the World Championship in Brazil for the second time at such an important moment. We are very optimistic and committed to providing an unforgettable experience for all participants and spectators,” said Edilson Rocha, coordinator of para-cycling at CBC.

This sports event not only brings together the best athletes in the world but also promotes breaking barriers and stigmas regarding people with disabilities. In addition, it contributes significantly to the development of para-cycling as a social and inclusive sport.

With the Para-cycling Track World Championship being held in Brazil, the country reaffirms its commitment to adapted sports and its ability to host large international events. The expectation is that the competition will leave a positive legacy not only for para-cycling but also for the entire sports community and society as a whole.

José Luiz Vasconcellos, president of CBC, highlighted the confidence placed by the International Cycling Union (UCI) in the work of CBC’s current management.

“Receiving events of great relevance on the world stage, such as the Para-cycling Track World Championship, demonstrates recognition of our commitment to sports and credibility in our organizational capacity. This confidence from UCI in our work fills us with pride and responsibility. We are prepared to once again make this event a milestone in the history of this sport,” said CBC’s president.

The 2024 Para-cycling Track World Championship is organized by the Brazilian Cycling Confederation (CBC) in partnership with the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), under the supervision of UCI. In addition, it has support from the Federal Government through Sports Incentive Law, Rio de Janeiro City Hall, and Rio de Janeiro State Cycling Federation (FECIERJ).
